Function:
Location:
Along school boundary fence, excluding main entry frontage.
The relationship of the school and its surrounding context varies. School boundaries are typically fenced and can be landscaped to fulfill specific functions. Boundaries can incorporate ‘buffer zones’ to ameliorate noise, protect sensitive environments or screen unwanted views. Depending on the nature of the boundary treatment, this zone may vary in levels of use. Some sites may require a buffer zone, which restricts student access. The needs of each boundary should be identified and addressed accordingly.
Criteria | Considerations |
---|---|
Microclimate | Existing trees and flora to be retained where possible. Consider need for windbreaks or summer breezes. |
Context | Consider noise (from neighboring properties and from school), views, security, privacy and aesthetics. |
Biodiversity Recovery | Generally a good opportunity to plant a mixture of endemic species which are suited to local conditions and require little maintenance. |
Pedestrian movement | Medium traffic adjacent playing field/ free play, low traffic in restricted access areas, high to pathways and shortcuts to street. |
Shade | Only required where student access is encouraged (i.e. near main building areas). |
Winter solar access | Ensure planting allows sufficient natural light to buildings, including neighboring properties. |
Furniture | Not required. |
Water | Sufficient hosecocks for irrigation. Plants should be selected to require watering only during establishment. |
Erosion | Little wear potential except for desire lines and short cuts. |
Surface | Mulch under trees, planting or turf. |
Solar glare | Not applicable. |
Allergenic plants | Due to the restricted access nature of the zone, plants that may cause contact allergies may be able to be used if there are no suitable alternatives. |
Stormwater | Council may require on site detention, which can be incorporated into this zone. |
Lighting | Refer Schools Facilities Standards. |
Signage | Not required. |
Maintenance | Low level to reflect low student use. |
