Function:
Location:
The street frontage on which the entrance is located.
The street frontage zone is a very public aspect of the school landscape. It is visible at all times, and its design and maintenance advertises the presence and standards of the school. The street frontage can assist the school’s integration with its surroundings by relating to other frontage treatments in the area.
This is a linear zone with points of high activity along its length, e.g. vehicle entry, major and minor pedestrian entry points. The landscape design should utilise a simple, effective treatment that identifies the school from a distance.
Criteria | Considerations |
---|---|
Microclimate | Avoid wind tunnels, overshadowing, heat and glare from paved surfaces. |
Context | Consider views in and out of school, surrounding landscape and architectural character. |
Biodiversity Recovery | If appropriate, incorporate locally native plants to promote the identity of the area. |
Pedestrian movement | Define main paths and connections with placement of planting. Direct towards entrance points and provide access for all users. Consider desire lines. Minimise potential for conflict between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. |
Shade | Consider shade in waiting and gathering areas, and along the main route into the school. Ensure selected or existing species do not drop branches, excess leaves or fruit. Consider advanced trees for street tree planting to enhance context and provide shade. |
Winter solar access | Ensure solar access is maintained to high level use areas of buildings such as offices, classrooms and the library. |
Furniture | Low requirement. |
Water | Sufficient hosecocks for irrigation. Ensure hose cocks do not form obstacles to pedestrian movement. |
Erosion | Medium to high potential for wear depending on functional arrangements and desire lines. |
Surface finish | Medium to high potential for wear depending on functional arrangements and desire lines. |
Solar glare | Bright, reflective surface areas to be avoided. |
Allergenic plants | Low to medium level may be acceptable away from main circulation routes. |
Stormwater | Particular attention required to avoid ponding in waiting and gathering areas. |
Lighting | Refer Schools Facilities Standards. |
Signage | Minor signage may be required to direct visitors. Refer Schools Facilities Standards. |
Maintenance | Medium to high level required as this zone has high public visibility. |
