External materials and finishes should be chosen from a “Whole of Life” framework using a select range of preferably sustainable materials designed to provide:

• Value for Money
• fit for purpose
• long term durability
• minimal maintenance requirements
• low maintenance costs

The preference is to use products with recycling potential on disposal and /or includes recycled content.

The selection of materials and finishes must be based on a knowledge of the activities to be conducted in the area.  

Use impact resistant materials in all pupil accessible areas  Visible surfaces should be capable of being easily cleaned and repaired if damaged.

WALLS

The following are recommended for external walls:   

• Masonry is the preferred material at low levels along walkways
• Face Brickwork (Minimise usage of special bricks, avoid excessive detailing and “deep” walls, minimise cutting)
• Consider use of cant and plinth bricks with chamfered profiles in human impact zones. Sharp edges and corners of brickwork should  be avoided. Brick sills which should not encroach into circulation spaces
• Porous bricks to be avoided in areas likely to be subject to graffiti
• Banding of brickwork should only be included with DoE Planning Committee approval
• Painted brickwork should only be included with DoE Planning Committee approval
• Bagged finish to brickwork should only be included with DoE Planning Committee approval
• Unpainted Concrete is preferred due to maintenance purposes
• Preformed Metal Cladding with Colorbond® type finish in standard off-the-shelf colour, can be used above 2.1m on framed buildings, with DoE Planning Committee approval
• Fibre cement can be used above 2.1m on framed buildings, with DoE Planning Committee approval

DOORS

The following are recommended door materials:

• Aluminium, timber solid core or steel sheet.

DOOR JAMBS       

Recommended door jamb materials are:

• Aluminium or steel

WINDOWS             

Recommended window materials are:

• Clear anodised aluminium
• No colour anodising or powder coating required
• Use PWD Suite 2 extrusions or similar commercial grade framing system

GLAZING

Refer to DG / WINDOWS / GLAZING

ROOF

The recommended roofing material is:

• Pre-finished metal with “off-the-shelf” colours preferred
• Colour to be selected so as to avoid glare to adjoining buildings

FASCIAS/GABLE/ ENDS/EAVES LINING

The recommended materials are:

• Pre-finished metal cladding, fibre cement
• Durability and long-term maintenance of the fascias / gables / eaves lining materials should be considered when selecting

WALKWAY POSTS

• If timber is used it should have stop chamfered edges and be stained or painted
• Single storey masonry colonnades are not recommended
• Eliminate sharp edges – chamfered corners if concrete 
• Rounded edges or CHS to steel work

EXTERNAL STEEL

• Below 2.1m, preferably use unpainted galvanised steel
• Above 2.1m and more than 8 km from the sea, could be painted steel

ROLLER SHUTTERS

• Steel with steel fittings, galvanised, unpainted

BUBBLER TROUGHS

Bubbler troughs are to be stainless steel.

EXTERNAL STEPS   & STAIRS

• Non-slip granolithic
• Delineate all step nosings in a non-slip, long lasting/wearing, contrasting tread colour to BCA (NCC) requirements

PAVING                                                                                                                                    

Refer to DG / LANDSCAPE HARDWORKS / PAVEMENTS

• Small areas of brick or porous rubber around trees where appropriate
• No brick strips in concrete
• No decomposed gravel on or within 10 metres of circulation routes

Concrete Pathways (Covered & Uncovered)

• Plain concrete
• Broomed or similar non-slip finish
• Pathway from main site entry to Administration Block may have colour or alternative finish subject to Cost Budget Procedures
• Large expanses of uncovered concrete adjacent to covered walkways may be coloured where glare will be a problem

VEHICULAR PAVEMENTS

ASSEMBLY AREA   

The recommended paving finish is:

• Coloured non-slip concrete to entire area to reduce glare                                                                     

PE & SPORTS COURTS

The recommended paving finish is:

• Asphalt concrete

PLAYGROUND SEATING                                  

Recommended material for playground seating is standard extruded aluminium.
