2.1 Extinguishers 

 

Standards

GUIDE NOTE: Delete subclause “selection and location” in NATSPEC Building Template/ Worksection and replace with the following

Selection and location to AS 2444.

  • Provide portable fire extinguishers  as shown in “Fire extinguisher schedule”. 
GUIDE NOTE: Add the following subclause to “extinguishers” in NATSPEC Building Template/worksection


General

  • Portable fire extinguishers must be provided within Homebases, no greater than 20 metres of the entry/egress point.
  • Extinguishers should be mounted 1200mm to centre of hook or handle.

Installation

  • Do not mount extinguishers inside an EDB or Electrical Switch Room.
  • Extinguisher identification and location discs should be supplied and installed for each extinguisher.
  • Verify the location of each extinguisher with the Principal’s Authorised Person / Principal’s Representative prior to installation.

GUIDE NOTE: Refer to the EFSG DG / BUILDING REGULATIONS 

Refer to the NCC requirements for portable fire extinguishers in EDB and Electrical Switch rooms and  portable fire extinguishers in lift motor rooms. Note - Lift installations are subject to WorkCover Authority approval and their requirements are to be determined in each instance.

“Alternative” Building Solutions

Homebases for ED (emotionally disabled) /BD (behaviour disability) students

  • Where a fire extinguisher is required, this is to be located in the nearest secure store to that space
  • The door is to have appropriate signage and the key is to be held by the assigned class teacher

Modular Design Range (MDR) Buildings:

  • One portable fire extinguisher appropriate to a Class A fire risk, is to be located at the egress point of one of the Practical Activities Areas per pair of Home Bases.

Dust Extraction Space in secondary school wood workshop:

  • Install suitable School Security Unit Alarm system to alert the NSW Fire Brigade to attend, should a fire occur.
  • Signage to advise school staff not to open Dust Extraction Space doors if a fire occurs.
2.2 Blankets

  • Provide fire blankets as shown in the  “Fire blankets schedule”.

GUIDE NOTE: Add the following to subclause “fire blankets” in NATSPEC Building Template / Worksection.  

Size: 1820 x 1220mm.

Material: Flameproof fibreglass to relevant SAA Code.

Installation: Verify the location of each fire blanket with the Principal’s Authorised Person / Principal’s Representative prior to installation.

Fixing: In accordance with manufacturer's direction 1500mm to centre of hook or handle, mounted over extinguisher.
