Security Categories For Openings

Maintaining the security of school buildings and facilities is an important factor within the design process, both for the property security and the security of the individual within the spaces and grounds.

The security needs of the various areas of the school have been categorized from A (low) to E (high). 

All openings should comply with the listed requirements, and the entire fabric should satisfy the performance standard for each category.

A    Windows: Securable.

Doors: Lockable, except that security is not required between adjoining rooms and spaces of this category or enclosed corridors.

Intended for ensuite rooms. All external doors and windows require locks.

Physically protected (eg, internal or external grilles).

Doors: Lockable, solid core door leaf.  Steel door frame.

Roofs: Ensure roof penetrations (i.e. Domelites/roof lights) are protected.

Windows: No windows unless habitable space physically protected (eg. internal or external grilles).

Doors: Solid core door leaf, min 40 mm thick or double sheeted steel door (sheets min 1 mm thick) both types with 2-point deadlocking. 

Steel door frame 2.5 mm thick. Avoid return air grilles.

Double leaf steel doors with Semaphore locking or steel roller shutters up to 1800 mm maximum.

Walls: Single thickness masonry or stud walls protected with steel mesh under lining.                             

Ensure walls continue to underside of roof.  

For conversions stores may use steel sheet 1.6 mm thick.   

Floors: Concrete, compressed fibrous cement or steel.

Ceiling: Protection (e.g. steel mesh) with tiled roofs or metal roofs where access is possible between the roof and ceiling.

Metal roofs do not generally require additional protection.

Doors: Steel security door set 4-point locking bars.             

Avoid return air grilles.

Walls: Double thickness bonded masonry min 190 mm.

Ceiling: Concrete.

Barriers: Should be included to separate areas that have community access from school only use areas.

General

Security related keying of spaces is set out within the Room data table section.

The general principles of security keying is as follows:

  • Key-Controlled Access is required only for initial entry points to security zones or spaces
  • Access by key at one point is desirable for easily found switching to security alarm systems and access lighting
  • Locks within each separable portion should be keyed alike, unless tabulated key to differ for individual spaces
  • All toilets should be keyed alike
  • Locks must not be Grand Master Keyed
  • The Canteen is not Master Keyed
  • Electrical Switch Rooms containing metering and Authority equipment are to be  master keyed to the Supply Authority requirements
